The Impact of Interior Design and Artwork on Patient Wellbeing 


Is artwork in hospitals simply an amenity, or does it have a real biological impact on patients? A 2025 study conducted by the NIH firmly supports the latter. Visual artwork lowers heart rate, improves mental health, and provides a psychological distraction. Specifically, it improves emotional health by triggering the brain's reward center to release dopamine and it engages the default mode network to give a sense of shared human connection—lowering cortisol and thereby reducing feelings of anxiety. Beyond this, researchers have found out that visual art can even lower your blood pressure and stress after viewing art. The release of dopamine is a neurotransmitter, related with motivation, pleasure and other positive emotions. Viewing meaningful art work activates parts of your brain linked to emotions and understanding others which help people in feeling more connected to others. Calm artwork like nature and scenery helps in relaxing the brain and body. 

Not only is it beneficial to look at art, but also to create different forms of art. Creating art lowers stress by reducing cortisol while simultaneously providing patients a safe way to express their emotions. 

Now let's zoom into how the interior design of a hospital affects its patients, because these spaces actually impact a person's emotional wellbeing quite directly. Certain design choices trigger neurological responses, mood and daily focus. Because a patient spends most of their time at the hospital, its interior design also impacts their long-term recovery trajectory. One of the most important elements of a hospital's interior design is natural light, which is really important for both physical and mental recovery. 



How Natural Light Accelerates Recovery


An experiment conducted by the NIH shows that natural sunlight speeds up a patient's recovery. The lighting of a hospital is paramount, affecting both the body and brain in various ways. For instance, spectrum and natural light helps control viruses, infections, and reduce the risk of depression, while brighter lighting facilitates stronger information processing and increased accuracy while completing complex visual tasks. Research also shows that a few wavelengths of full spectrum light reduces the spread of bacteria. Natural light helps control the body's circadian rhythm, enhancing sleep quality. Furthermore, it can reduce the amount of pain medications that patients need and that is also proven by a study conducted by the NIH. The study showed that the patients in sunnier rooms needed 22% less medication than the ones in the darker rooms. 

Architects try to place the hospital rooms on the outsides of the hospitals because doing that gives the patients access to daylight, and this design technique is called evidence based design. However lighting is only one part of creating a better, healing environment. The hospital must also consider the impact of noise levels on patients. 



Benefits of Noise Level Management in Hospitals


Excessive noise increases blood pressure, stress, heart rate, affects the digestion system, weakens the immune system, and can also cause other health problems. The extra noise in a hospital can also interrupt a patient's sleep which slows down the healing process, however a few researchers have found that pain, anxiety and not being able to move freely when sleeping affects the patient more negatively than noise. But that doesn't mean that noisy hospitals are not a problem—in fact, the World Health Organization recommends that the level of noise in a hospital room should stay below 30 decibels; however, most hospitals end up exceeding that. As a result, hospital architects have begun adding features like sound proof walls, high performance acoustic ceiling materials, smart ward layouts, and general noise reduction layouts.

 

Soundproof walls lowers noise levels, creates a calmer environment and helps patients rest and recover faster without getting disturbed. 

High performance acoustic ceiling materials have the ability to absorb sound, reduce echos, and make alarms, footsteps and conversations less disruptive to the patients.

Smart ward layouts can control how noise moves through the hospital. The layout is set in a way where all the noise sources such as elevators, nurse stations, and equipment rooms are all placed far away from the rooms that are made for patients. A few smart ward layouts also make private rooms, with soundproof walls, made for the patients to sleep in. 

General noise reduction hospital layouts are pretty similar to smart ward layouts, the only thing that makes them different is that in a general noise reduction layout, there aren't any technologies, such as sound proof walls, used so it's just that the rooms are placed in a way where there is less noise. While reducing noise helps with creating a peaceful environment, hospitals also focus on bringing nature to their designs because greenery provides additional benefits. 



How Natural Views and Green Spaces Impact Healing


Researchers have found out that having access to green spaces improves human health and wellbeing. When a patient views nature, the brain responds by activating areas that are connected to their emotions, focus, and stress control. This response from the brain supports better health and recovery. Adding nature in hospital designs shows that recovery is not only influenced by medical treatment but also requires the wellbeing of the patient's mental health. Because of this, architects are adding outdoor spaces near the ICUs to make it easily accessible and available. These hospital gardens not only benefit the patients but also the staff that work there by giving them a place to relax and provide them with a better work experience. While designing these ICU gardens, the architects make sure that they are accessible, peaceful, private, and comfortable for the patients, staff and visitors. Another way architects are adding nature to hospitals is by using the biophilic design. The biophilic design is when they add things like rooftop gardens, and green walls. Green walls allow plants to be grown vertically on the surfaces of the building. By doing this the architects are creating spaces that feel less clinical and stressful and are more comfortable and relaxing for the patients.

Overall, hospital design plays an important role in supporting patients’ physical and emotional healing, from natural light and calming artwork to reduced noise and access to nature. By creating peaceful, comfortable, and healing environments, architects can help hospitals become spaces that support recovery rather than simply treat illness.
