Why do humans create art? Explore the psychology, evolution, neuroscience behind creativity

Have you ever wondered why humans create art? From an evolutionary perspective, a painting cannot feed us, a song cannot protect us from predators, and a sculpture cannot build shelter. At first glance, art appears almost unnecessary.
Yet wherever humans have existed, art has followed. More than 45,000 years ago, across continents and throughout history, our ancestors have carved figures, composed music, danced, and decorated their bodies with remarkable consistency.
If evolution tends to favour behaviours that improve survival and reproduction, why has artistic expression persisted across every known human culture? Is art merely a pleasant by-product of our intelligence, or did it play a more fundamental role in shaping the human mind? Answering these questions requires looking beyond art itself. By drawing on evidence from evolutionary biology, psychology, and neuroscience, researchers are beginning to uncover how creativity may not solely be a cultural luxury but a defining feature of what makes us human.
To answer this question, we need to dive deeper beyond museums, literature, or even written language. Archaeological evidence suggests that artistic expression appears to have emerged long before the rise of civilisation, stretching back tens of thousands of years. Some of the earliest known examples include engraved ochre pieces and shell beads discovered in Blombos Cave in South Africa, dating to around 75,000 years ago, as well as cave paintings in Europe and Indonesia that are more than 40,000 years old.

What makes these discoveries remarkable is not just their age but also the time, effort, and valuable resources that were invested.
Perhaps art was never simply about beauty; it was about communication.
That is one of the earliest explanations proposed by evolutionary scientists.
Long before the invention of writing, humans relied on symbols, images, music, dance, and storytelling to share knowledge, strengthen social bonds and collective identity. A cave painting could preserve information about animals, a ritual dance could reinforce group identity, and stories passed down through generations could transmit cultural values and survival knowledge. From this perspective, creativity offered an indirect evolutionary advantage. Rather than helping an individual survive a harsh environment alone, artistic expression may have helped groups cooperate more effectively.
However, this explanation is only part of the story. Not all forms of art clearly communicate practical information. A haunting melody, an abstract painting, or a beautifully crafted sculpture can move us deeply without conveying instructions in any obvious way. This has led researchers to consider another possibility: maybe art evolved to serve as a bridge between minds, allowing one person's perceptions and emotions to be experienced and interpreted by others.
If evolution helps explain why humans may have begun creating art, neuroscience helps explain how our brains make it possible.
There is no single "creativity centre" in the brain. However, creativity emerges through the interaction of multiple brain networks working together. One system becomes active when our minds wander, imagine

possibilities, or generate new ideas (The DMN). Meanwhile, the other evaluates those ideas, helping us refine, organise, and decide which ones are worth pursuing (the CEN). A third network, known as the Salience Network, helps the brain switch between imagination and focused attention depending on the task at hand.
A musician improvising a melody, a writer developing a story, or a student sketching an idea all rely on these networks continuously generating, evaluating, and refining thoughts rather than on a single "creative" region of the brain. This dynamic collaboration explains how creativity is both spontaneous and deliberate.
Interestingly, our brains are just as active when experiencing art as when creating it. Looking at a painting, listening to music, or reading a compelling story can activate brain regions involved in emotion, memory, attention, and reward, making art a uniquely immersive human experience.
Beyond creativity and imagination, research suggests that art can influence the way we think, feel, and connect with the world around us. This growing field of study is known as neuroaesthetics, which explores how the brain responds to beauty, creativity, and artistic experiences.
When we engage with art, our brains do more than simply recognise colours, sounds, or patterns; it can trigger emotional responses and encourage us to see situations from different perspectives. A familiar song may remind us of a specific moment in our lives, while a powerful story can help us understand experiences different from our own.
This connection has also led researchers to explore the role of art in mental health. Creative activities such as drawing, music, writing, and other forms of expression are being studied for their potential to support emotional regulation and well-being.
One of the most striking examples of the connection between art, memory, and the brain comes from music. A former ballerina, Marta C. González, who was living with dementia, responded to Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake by recalling parts of the choreography she had performed decades earlier.

While music cannot restore memories lost to dementia, such moments reveal how deeply artistic experiences can become connected with our emotions, personal histories, and even learned movements, which may remain accessible even when other memories are affected.
Art does not only reflect what is happening inside our minds; it also has the ability to shape how we understand ourselves and each other.
So, why do humans create art?
Science does not point to a single answer. Art may have helped early humans communicate, strengthen social bonds, and preserve shared knowledge. It may also have emerged naturally from the same abilities that make humans capable of imagination, storytelling, and symbolic thinking.
What we do know is that art is deeply connected to the way our brains work. It allows us to transform thoughts into symbols, emotions into expressions, and individual experiences into something that can be shared with others. From ancient cave paintings to modern films, music, and digital creations, art has remained a constant expression of creativity across human history.
